Lowrance HDS 5 Fish Finder

The HDS-5 deal ships with the display unit, mounting bracket, dual-frequency transom-mount transducer, operations guide, set up guide book, rapid start manual, along with a combination NMEA0183 data/power cable.

Additionally, the HDS-5 can be purchased as a stand alone chartplotter or stand-alone fishfinder. The chartplotter edition is designated the HDS-5m and the fishfinder as the HDS-5x.

Cartography options include Nautic Insight (coastal), Lake Awareness (inland lakes), or even a Navionics world base map. The Lowrance HDS-5 features a single chart-card slot which enable it to make use of Navionics Platinum and Platinum+ charts in addition to any Navionics inland lakes cards.

We measured the Lowrance HDS-5 case at 5.8-inches high by 7.1-inches wide and just under 3.3-inches deep

We utilized the accompanying gimbal bracket to attach the Lowrance HDS-5 to our own test platform.

The detachable front bezel can make for effortless panel mounting with no extra hardware apart from the correct mounting screws.

Connectivity
Whenever attached to these types of optional devices, the Lowrance HDS-5 can display Sirius weather conditions and also radio, and even engine gauges. A single cable that fastens to the case back having a twist-lock connector supplies power and NMEA0183 data through individual legs.

The display contains an internal Gps navigation sensing unit, but the unit can still use an optional exterior GPS sensor as required or desired. We used the internal antenna for this evaluation.

The onboard NMEA 0183 interface facilitates data transfer rates up to 38,400 baud. This specific unit also can interface with a NMEA 2000 or even Navico Ethernet network.

Display Size and Viewability
The HDS-5 gives you a 3.6-inch wide by 3.6-inch high screen that measures 5-inches on the diagonal and carries 480 by 480 pixels of resolution.

The Lowrance HDS-5 is display screen is bright, well-defined, and usually easy to read.

Sometimes however, particularly on the chart page where there can be a great deal of info displayed, you’ll have to get up close and personal to look at all the detail which appears onscreen.

When viewed straight-on the screen maintains its brightness whether or not the user is wearing polarized sun shades. Even at high side angles We noted absolutely no darkening or even decrease in legibility.

We rated this Lowrance superb for daytime viewability. No display fogging was apparent within the display anytime.

The Lowrance HDS-5 has both a day and night color palette. The night colour scheme changes letters and numbers shown onscreen to a more dark colour for simpler nighttime viewing. On the sounder page, the colors invert for enhanced low-light viewing.

Fishfinder The Lowrance HDS-5 internal sounder uses Lowrance broadband digital signal processing to boost sounder viewing. Output power is not a viable measurementwhen you compare the Broadband Sounder with a conventionalanalogunitbecause the sensitivitywith the broadband sounder can be so high it usessignificantly less output power.

The test systemis capable of creatinga maximum of 31 watts of power whencoupledeither to a 50/200 kHz or 83/200 kHz transducer. We utilized a transom-mount 50/200 kHz unitfor our testing.

Standardcharacteristicsconsist of auto and manual depth ranging, zoom, and bottom lock. The unit will even exhibitwater temperature wheneverattached to a transducer using these capabilities.

Hitting the Menu button from the sonar page enables you to adjust the level of sensitivity, depth range, frequency, and ping rate. Going to the main sonar menu enables you to select a depth line, color palette, zoom options, and A-scope.

Zoom can be turned off or set from 2x to 8x in single increments byusing the range keys. The zoomed area is actually chosenwith the cursor pad. This is a very powerful zoom function when compared to other mixdeviceswe have tested.

Sounder infocan be shown full displayor in various split screen combos. Duringthe testing the Lowrance HDS-5 sounder marked the 3 of the immersed targets we placedthroughout the water well in auto gain, but toobtain a much more enhanced sonar imageIadjustedthe system level of sensitivity down 3% in the automatic mode.

GeneralI'd personally rate the Lowrance HDS-5 sounder perfect for both presentation and ease of use.
